The California Department of Parks and Recreation plans to ignite a 5-acre prescribed burn near the observation platform at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park in Felton starting on Wednesday, March 19.
Actual date of ignition will depend on weather conditions that are favorable for smoke dispersal, and control of the fire.
“We need a little bit of wind to disburse the smoke,” said Park Ranger Tim Hyland. “But if it’s too windy, we don’t want to do it.”
The 5-acre burn will burn for about a week to reduce the threat of catastrophic wildfire and to maintain the rare Sandhills habitat within the park.
