The Scotts Valley Arts Commission announced the winners of its annual “Verse in the Valley” contest June 6 in front of the Scotts Valley City Council. The Press-Banner published winners in the categories for kindergarten-to-third-grade, fourth-and-fifth-grades and middle school students in its June 22 edition. Below are the winning poems from the other three categories.

After the overwhelming defeat of the ill-conceived budget-balancing propositions in the May 19 election, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and state lawmakers seem finally to be aware that half-baked measures aren’t the answer.

Kai Ryan Wells-Cavanaugh was born at 8:25 a.m. April 29, 2010, to Phoebe Anne Wells and Ryan William Cavanaugh of Felton. He weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces at Sutter Maternity and Surgery Center in Santa Cruz.

The current production of the Mountain Community Theater “ain’t for sissies” to paraphrase Betty Davis. Tracy Letts’ August: Osage County, winner of the 2008 Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, explodes on stage with a dysfunctional family three generations deep.

The fourth annual Tech Trek 5-kilometer fun run from Baymonte Christian School in Scotts Valley is set for a week from Saturday.

Luthien Marie Mohamed was born at 12:13 p.m. Oct. 6, 2010, to Julia J. and Aaron J. Mohamed of Bonny Doon. She weighed 6 pounds, 7 ounces at Kaiser Permanente Homestead Campus in Santa Clara.
