Letter: Jim Hart will make a great sheriff

We are very fortunate here in Santa Cruz County to have three excellent candidates running for the office of sheriff. I will be voting for Jim Hart because of his dedication, experience and qualifications. As a retired Scotts Valley police captain, the retired director of the Public Safety Program at Cabrillo College, and a fellow college instructor, I have had many occasions to work with Jim.

SVHS Students Learn A Little Self Defense

Martial arts instructor Elliot Stone was at Scotts Valley High School nearly all day Tuesday showing P.E. students how to defend themselves if they are ever attacked, and even better, how to avoid the situation all together.

Letter: No More School Taxes

I have owned property in different areas of Santa Cruz and Monterey counties for 28 years. I currently own property in Scotts Valley. The school taxes are overwhelming. I currently pay over $1,000 year in property taxes just for schools, and now we are faced with yet another school tax (Measure A) that would cost me another $300/year or more in school taxes. To top it off, our kids are grown and gone. By the way, what happened to the California Lottery school funding?

Letter: Give Our Students A Technological Boost

The San Lorenzo Valley Core Math Program just received a large donation from the SLV Foundation For Education to purchase Chromebooks for two high school math classes. The state of California has mandated that core subject testing will only be given with electronic devices.

Letter: Feedback on recent letters

I would like to address three recent letters written to the editor about the sheriff's race.

Kids of Summer: Local gymnasts set for national competition

A dozen young Scotts Valley gymnasts have their eyes set on victory after they all qualified for the USA Gymnastics National Championships earlier this month.

Editor’s Notes: Your new editor loves newspapers and here’s why

For 14 years I’ve lived on the other end of the bay, but have long admired the wonderful communities of Scotts Valley, Ben Lomond and Boulder Creek.  It’s sunnier up here and the people might be even friendlier. It reminds me a little bit of home. I am very happy to be joining this community as editor and general manager of the community’s newspaper.

The Mountain Gardener: Summer fruit season is a delight at the Farmer’s Market

At this time of year it’s easy to get the recommended nine servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
