What would you plant if you lived in a flat area with very poor drainage? Where the landscape is shaped by limestone or dolomite bedrock, and the shallow soil is filled with carbonate rock? Where there is limited surface water and no above-ground rivers, and where lakes and swamps are present, but the water is marshy and not palatable for drinking? Where you have two seasons, six months of rain and six months dry, and — oh yeah — did I mention you get 100 inches of rain during the wet season?

Led by two star runners and a host of strong teammates, the Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley girls cross country teams are bound for the state championship.

MEXICO — I'm halfway through my trip in Mexico. I started in Tuxtla, the capital of Chiapas, last week and will stop today in Campeche in Yucatan on the Gulf of Mexico. How different are the people, the soils, the climate, the weather and the landscapes of each locale. It's as diverse as going from Bonny Doon to Pasatiempo to Scotts Valley and then to San Lorenzo Valley.

The San Lorenzo Valley High Cougars completed an undefeated Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League schedule with a win over Harbor High and face Menlo School of Atherton in a first round playoff matchup on Saturday.
