It’s the law: Recent law a boon for vulnerable kids

I had a plain vanilla childhood. Thank goodness. Ours was a middle-class neighborhood with little crime or drama. Even though many families, including my own, went through the anguish of divorce, all the kids I knew had a family to fall back on. That idyll colored my vision of the world.

Commentary: Time for some political homework

In my unofficial poll — well, while talking with friends since Tuesday’s election, anyway — it seems the one thing all voters have in common is a sense of relief that the interminable (and disgusting) political attack ads have ended. Gosh, wouldn’t it be refreshing — oh yeah, and informative — if candidates ran on their résumés? Firing zingers at other office seekers isn’t really one of the qualifications we were looking for.

Talk about money: Home prices scrape the barrel

The housing market in and around Scotts Valley can be broken down into three categories: the good, the bad and the ugly.

Bruins ready to start new chapter on hardwood

It is no real surprise the Bethany University women’s basketball team is excited for a new season and the chance to leave last season as a distant memory: The Bruins finished last season 4-20 amid a flurry of bad luck.

Mud Bowl

In certainly the muddiest game of the season, the San Lorenzo Valley High football team defeated valley rival Scotts Valley High, 23-7, last Saturday, Oct. 30. The win gave the undefeated Cougars sole possession of first place in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League with two games remaining, against Santa Cruz High and Harbor High, the SCCAL bottom feeders.

Editorial: Be safe on Halloween — and then vote

Fall is an exciting time in our area. The weather starts to cool, the high school football teams are in action (and throttling their opponents) and folks are decorating their homes for Halloween. On Tuesday, Nov. 2, we’ll head to the polls for the third time in 2010, this time to vote on a new governor, nine state propositions and a handful of local offices. With that in mind, we’d like to remind parents to talk with their children about these two important issues.

Editor’s Note

We received several letters this week from candidates who are running for various offices. Per company policy, the Press-Banner does not publish letters directly from candidates during election season; the editorial page would become a free-for-all if we did. We will, however, publish the letters at www.pressbanner.com.
