Go World Cup: The stolen trophy and other tales of the World Cup

Plenty of trivia has built up around the World Cup, the premier event in one of the world’s most popular sports. Below are a few choice items.

Letter: Bethany U should set better example

I am very disappointed in the students and staff of Bethany University. All of the kids have left their dorms for the summer, and when they cleaned out their dorms, one Dumpster was supplied. In it went perfectly good rugs, many couches, good tables and bags full of perfectly good clothing.

Around Town: Fundraiser for youth programs raises $4,600

Scotts Valley Police Department Chief John Weiss greets arrivals at a D.A.R.E. fundraising golf tournament at Valley Gardens Golf Course in Scotts Valley on May 13.

Sports Shorts: SLV softball wins first playoff game

The San Lorenzo Valley varsity softball team defeated Live Oak High School of Morgan Hill, 2-1, in the first round of the Central Coast Section playoffs Wednesday, May 19.

Editor’s Notebook: Grab this election by the horns

At a retirement party for a longtime Scotts Valley teacher, I bumped into Tricia Webber, who works for the county elections department coordinating and training all the polling place staff for Election Day.

New Faces

• Laila Jane Maloney was born at 3:48 p.m. May 3, 2010, to Jennifer Nicole Grijalva and Louis Scotts Maloney of Mount Hermon. She weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces at Sutter Maternity and Surgery Center in Santa Cruz.

The Mountain Gardener: Careful plant choice, maintenance makes a difference

The landscape is so lush in May. Shades of green are everywhere you look — apple green, grass green, forest green, spring green, pine, olive, lime, jade, chartreuse, kelp, sage. Did you know the human eye can identify more than 200,000 shades of green?

The Wine Lover: Port and sherry demystified

Port and sherry are two wines that are often misunderstood and frequently underappreciated.

Let’s Go Fishin’: Good fishing prevails

Fishing in the ocean has been good for salmon and halibut, and rockfish are showing up, as well. Freshwater fishing opportunities are open, too. In our local waters, Loch Lomond reservoir is open, and the Sacramento watershed is producing shad and striped bass.
