The Mountain Gardener: Small spaces can be wonderful places

He told me that his was a one-of-a-kind garden. Unique in such a small space. He asked if I would I be interested in visiting some time. I love being invited to tour all types of gardens, but I had an inkling that the garden of Rich Merrill, former Director of the Horticulture Dept. and Professor Emeritus at Cabrillo College, would be something special.

The Mountain Gardener: The Gardens of Poland: Part 1

In Poland, you greet someone by saying “dzien dobry,” which means hello or good day. You hear it at every restaurant and market, and even high on a mountain trail. Fishermen did not know exactly how warm the water was or how close to shore it had pushed its way in. With the warm water came the highly esteemed game fish albacore tuna.

Untarnished etiquette: Aging should not be seen as a negative

Our Western culture tends to idealize youth, while showing little respect or courtesy for our aging, mature population. However, many countries in the world honor their elder citizens. Age, in those societies, is symbolic of experience, wisdom and knowledge, which is shared with the younger generations.

Talk about money: With election finished, taxes uncertain

The long political campaign is over. Endless hours of debates and political ads ended with not much change in Washington, D.C. Barack Obama is still president, Democrats still control the Senate and Republicans still control the House.
