Commentary: Polo Barn demolition decision should be delayed
On November 11, 2013 a public notice was sent out stating the Scotts Valley City Council was considering an agreement to allow the demolition of the historic Polo Barn complex. This notice was announced by mail and sent only to those residents that resided within 300 feet of the Polo Ranch development. The notice further stated that in just nine days time the demolition approval would be discussed at the City Council meeting. For residents interested in historic and recreational resources in the city this change was a complete surprise as this revised agreement had not been disclosed or discussed with the Planning Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission, the Scotts Valley Historical Society or at any other public forum before the November 20, 2013 City Council meeting.
The Mountain Gardener: A new tree for my sister
Last fall my sister lost her favorite tree in a windstorm. She lives on Fox Island in the southern part of Puget Sound. I remember hearing about the extraordinary Pacific storm on the national news shattering records in the Northwest. Gusts up to 76 miles per hour closed bridges while falling trees hurt two people and thousands lost power. Her Silk Tree didn't stand a chance.

I would like to suggest that some changes can be fun to do. Generally speaking, when we think about habit change, we think “negative” habits, am I right?
The Mountain Gardener: Keep your indoor plants alive during cold winter
I miss the Christmas tree and decorations that bring color to the house over the holidays. After they're packed away for another year and the tree recycled it looks a bit bare around here. The houseplants get their favorite places back now near the windows. This an important month for them when the garden is asleep. I want them to look great but Mother Nature delivers darker skies and less daylight hours. Even though they are still green they are taking a break and don't grow much over the dark days of winter. Don't become a clueless houseplant killer. Remember houseplants clean the air. We need them.
Local archer takes aim at competition
Last year Scotts Valley 12-year-old Hollie Amaro performed a Robin Hood. Named after the famed archer of lore, an arrow Hollie shot during competition in Sacramento split an opponent's arrow that had previously struck the bullseye.
