Plain talk about food: Smells I Remember and a Very Berry Fool

Here in Ben Lomond, our star jasmine is blooming above our front porch. Each time we get a breeze, its’ scent permeates our home, sending my thoughts back to the 1940’s.

The Mountain Gardener: Gardener recalls gardens worldwide

I started writing this column in October 2005. I remember the day the editor of the paper at that time gave me the go-ahead and bestowed upon me the title, “The Mountain Gardener.”  I was so excited. I immediately started writing down every subject I could think of. In the world of horticulture there are myriad subjects to write about and nearly as many different plants. I'll never run of ideas.

Let’s go fishin’: Salmon visit Santa Cruz

The morning fog still veiled the coast as boaters steamed in with limits of huge Chinook salmon, the filet tables were abuzz with stories of big salmon caught and bigger ones that got away! The setting may sound like it took place in Alaska; it was actually here in Santa Cruz.

Let’s go fishin’: Halibut and albacore

It’s a busy time on the Monterey Bay with rockfish, halibut fishing along with boats heading offshore for albacore. Even whale watching has been great! There are so many choices you have to fit your fancy on the bay right now.

The Mountain Gardener: Flowers flourishing in Pacific Northwest

My summer travel season started this year in the Puget Sound in the Pacific Northwest. My sister lives on Fox Island overlooking the Sound with a breathtaking view of Mt. Rainier. There are so many gardens and nurseries in this area I hardly know where to start when I come up here. Any destination was sure to provide lush landscapes and a cornucopia of colorful flowers.

The Mountain Gardener: How to water plants correctly

The recent heat wave was one for the record books. The temps were not the highest we've ever had around here, but as each day melted into the next I kept thinking that fog, nature's air conditioning, was surely on its way. Even drought tolerant plants need a little help at these times.
