The Scotts Valley Arts Commission announced the winners of its annual “Verse in the Valley” contest June 6 in front of the Scotts Valley City Council. The Press-Banner published winners in the categories for kindergarten-to-third-grade, fourth-and-fifth-grades and middle school students in its June 22 edition. Below are the winning poems from the other three categories.

Mountain Gardener: A Beautiful Garden Doesn’t Need A Lot Of Water

Has the hot, dry, windy weather made your garden look like mid-summer? Our meager spring rains have all but disappeared from the soil and what hasn't evaporated the weeds have taken. The local water companies all have water conservation requirements that began last month. I'm getting lots of calls and emails asking for advice about the best way to use water efficiently so the garden doesn't look like the Sahara this summer. I'm helping others redesign their gardens with an eye towards ongoing water conservation.

Thomas Mason Wagner was born at 11:06 p.m. May 12 to Carrie Francis and Ryan Justin Wagner of Felton. He weighed 8 pounds, 15 ounces at Dominican Santa Cruz Hospital.

There are new screens up on the tennis courts at the Boulder Creek Golf and Country Club, where tennis instructor Chris Bradley hopes to renew excitement about the sport in the San Lorenzo Valley.

Immel, Brooks tie the knot

Jeremy Immel, son of Andy and Cathy Immel of Boulder Creek, and Demerris Brooks, daughter of Dennis and Rebecca Donaldson of San Jose, were married April 19 on Kauai, Hawaii.
