Bus burns on Highway 17

On September 9, at about 5:30 p.m., a bus carrying 54 children caught on fire. The children in grades ranging from elementary to high school were part of a singing group from Palo Alto, and were traveling to Santa Cruz.

Music on the Mountain, a big hit

On September 13, the Performing Arts Center at San LorenzoValleyHigh School was filled to capacity with people waiting to hear Michel Singher conduct Espressivo. The music that was played represented 18th, 19th and 20th century composers. The sounds of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Jacques Ibert, Richard Wagner and Paul Hindemith were full of frivolity, power, tenderness and a touch of all that is wild.

Scotts Valley Senior Center gets facelift

At the ScottsValleySeniorCenter, seniors are always on the move. It is important that where ever they “move,” it is safe for them to walk. Their patio, for example, was in need of some upgrades.

West Nile virus infected horse east of Watsonville

The California Department of Food and Agriculture announced confirmation of a case of West Nile virus in a horse east of Watsonville. Spread by mosquitoes, West Nile is a bird can also infect people and animals. In Santa CruzCounty, this is the first case reported in 2015.

2015 San Lorenzo Valley HS Football Preview

Head Coach Dave Poetzinger returns for another season of leading the Cougars’ football team. For 20 years, Poetzinger was the right-hand man of retired coach Doug Morris. During that era, the Cougars won the numerous Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League’s football titles and made high rounds of CCS tournament. Some refer to that time as the ‘glory years’ for the Cougars. Last year, SLVHS returned to the CCS playoffs for the first time since 2010, with 8-3 overall, 4-1 league record and Poetzinger was voted league's Coach of the Year.
