Your Health: Say what? Ear wax buildup can affect hearing

I’m writing about a subject that may not be too appealing or romantic, but it’s something that pretty much affects all of us. I recently wrote about hearing loss and mentioned that a frequent cause of this was from blockage due to ear wax, also called cerumen.

Talk about Money: Avoiding gasoline saves drivers money

My friend Richard Coffey likes being able to drive his electric car in the carpool lane, even when he’s alone. He likes not spewing carbon into the air when he’s idling at a stoplight. But what he likes best about driving his 2012 Chevy Volt is that it saves him money.

The Mountain Gardener: Keep your indoor plants alive during cold winter

I miss the Christmas tree and decorations that bring color to the house over the holidays. After they're packed away for another year and the tree recycled it looks a bit bare around here. The houseplants get their favorite places back now near the windows. This an important month for them when the garden is asleep. I want them to look great but Mother Nature delivers darker skies and less daylight hours. Even though they are still green they are taking a break and don't grow much over the dark days of winter. Don't become a clueless houseplant killer. Remember houseplants clean the air. We need them.

Gardener: Stuff your stocking with natives

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas around here. The community trees are lit, homes and businesses are brightly decorated and Mother Nature is soaking up that much-appreciated rainfall. Santa is looking at the list you secretly keep, and if you've been good, you can probably add one more request. There's still time to get natives in the ground, so add some of these plants to your Christmas list.

Plain Talk about Food: Memorial Day memories and a strawberry-rhubarb slab pie

It hit me as hard as though I had been punched in the stomach. The old boarding house had burned down and the rubble had been cleared.

The Mountain Gardener: The garden of Robby Frank

There's a gentle guy with a beautiful garden among us in Scotts Valley — who's a serial killer. A killer of moles, that is.
