The Mountain Gardener: How to water plants correctly

The recent heat wave was one for the record books. The temps were not the highest we've ever had around here, but as each day melted into the next I kept thinking that fog, nature's air conditioning, was surely on its way. Even drought tolerant plants need a little help at these times.

Your Health: Doctor’s bicycle tumble a stark reminder

I did it again. I had another fall.  No, not from a ladder this time, (I think I learned my lesson), but from my bicycle. Thankful to be alive. Saved again from my own carelessness. How many times is it going to take to figure this out?

Talk about money: Insurance bought early can defray long-term care costs

Valley Neighbors: Local surf icon teaches life lessons

There are some people that you meet in life who you know are special right away. Surfing icon, Richard “Frosty” Hesson, of Santa Cruz, is one of these people. The Mountain Gardener: Flowers flourishing in Pacific Northwest

My summer travel season started this year in the Puget Sound in the Pacific Northwest. My sister lives on Fox Island overlooking the Sound with a breathtaking view of Mt. Rainier. There are so many gardens and nurseries in this area I hardly know where to start when I come up here. Any destination was sure to provide lush landscapes and a cornucopia of colorful flowers.

Mountain Gardener: Draw children to the garden

In the summertime, kids have lots of time to enjoy the great outdoors. What better way to teach them how our planet works than to let them grow something in their own garden. Share your enthusiasm for gardening by getting your kids or the neighbor kids interested, too. You'll find sharing your knowledge with a child particularly rewarding and you will have helped create a fellow gardener for the rest of their life.
