Healthy Living: The race that wasn’t

It had been four months since I last raced, and the itch to commit to something had grown incessant. Following the lead of my running partner, Erin, I signed up for the Santa Cruz Mountains 21k, a trail race from Harvey West Park through Pogonip and deep into Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, with two waist-deep river crossings.

The Wine Lover: French regulation and New World discovery

The wine world is split into two encompassing paradigms. These are commonly labeled the New World and the Old World.

The Mountain Gardener: An early fall to-do list

"May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds. May your rivers flow without end ... down into a desert of red rock ... where something strange and more beautiful and more full of wonder than your deepest dreams waits for you.” — Edward Abbey

It’s the law: Redistricting mysteries still hazy

Surely all who read our weekly epistle have seen the stories about redistricting. The supervisors recently voted to adopt the plan that splits Scotts Valley along Highway 17 into two supervisorial districts. Those living east of Highway 17 within the city limits moved from the 5th District to the 1st District. There has been much speculation about why this plan was proposed. At present, the reasons remain shrouded in mystery.

Plain talk about food: Plain talk about bread

For a long time, I have felt that we need to get back in touch with the miracle of yeast, the smell of bread dough and the sheer joy of making bread.

Valley People: The passion to help

I met Dr. Bill Morris several years ago at a neighborhood gathering. He briefly shared about his work as a palliative care doctor-an area of medicine I knew nothing about. However, it wasn't until my mom was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, and eventually sent home to die, that I became interested in learning more about end of life care. As a result of this experience, I decided to interview Dr. Morris. He begins his story:

Your Health: Added sugar a pitfall in American diet

Halloween is soon upon us, and our little trick-or-treaters will be carrying home bags full of candy. As candy is full of sugar, I’d like to discuss the effects of sugar on our health.
