Plain talk about food: In search of the perfect muffin

It was in the 1980’s when I discovered a famous Seattle coffee shop’s giant “banana nut muffins.”  Instantly, I became addicted.

Trout season makes welcome return

The third Saturday in April has been a date that marks the spring opening for trout season for decades. But with more privately owned lakes, there is less water regulated by the state and more areas that do not rely on the traditional opening day. The communities that do rely on opening day have been anticipating the opener and have increased stocking programs and set up derbies to bring more visitors.

Can the U.S really stop global warming?

“We are concerned about the end of the world, but we are also concerned about the end of the month.” Those are the words of a Yellow Vest protestor after France, in an effort to combat global warming, announced it would raise gas taxes by 30 cents, bringing the price to about $7.36 a gallon. The plan led to riots in the streets of Paris and has since been suspended.

Good Friday: East & West

Growing up in Boulder Creek, I lived right between the elementary school and St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Father Kelly would toll the one large bell in the tower on holy days. As a participant of ‘Religious Retreat’, school staff would walk us from the campus to the Methodist church a few blocks away for religious education. And when winter had past, every fellow youngster looked forward to ‘Easter Vacation’. We’d never heard of ‘Spring Break’ before; it hadn’t been invented yet.

Healthy Living: Your 8-year-old can run a marathon

Every child should have the opportunity to experience the sense of pride that comes with physical accomplishment. While not every kid will excel at sports such as baseball, soccer or football, all able-bodied kids can run. And most love it.

Let’s go fishin’: White hot sea bass fishing

White sea bass fishing has heated up recently as the large fish started feeding on squid, entertaining fishermen in the bay. Anglers off Pajaro caught sea bass to 60 pounds, while some are still being caught off Monterey and Half Moon Bay. Albacore are also a great bet for anglers as the weather calms down and the warm water gets closer to shore. Salmon fishing has started to take the back seat for local fishermen.
