SVHS Falcons vs. SCHS Cardinals

As high school basketball season comes to an end, ScottsValleyHigh School will be celebrating the basketball players who are graduating. The annual celebration consists of a younger player giving a speech honoring a graduating player. Following each ceremony is a basketball game, this year against Santa Cruz High School. Lions Super Bowl Saturday

There are two Bowl games this weekend, and Santa Cruz County will host the one guaranteed to be most fun! It’s North against South this Saturday, February 6, at the 10th Annual Lions Senior Bowl at SoquelHigh School. The Lions Bowl features senior all-stars from NorthCounty high schools going up against seniors from SouthCounty high schools, and everybody is going to win!

Dear Editor,

I reside at the end of a privately maintained old lumber road. On Friday, January 22, Scenic Way was blocked to all inbound and outbound traffic due to downed tree/power lines. Our neighborhood is fortunate to have an alternative access route when either Scenic or Park Drive closes. When one road closes, all residential traffic is funneled through this private section. With more than a hundred vehicles passing through, the road quickly turned to thick mud; previous hardpan turned into deep pot holes, and two cars ended up in the drainage ditch.

Dear Editor,

It would have been great to remind drivers that since 2008 California has had a law requiring motorists to turn on their headlights on whenever windshield wipers are needed. There are far too many motorists that do not seem to be aware of this law, AND of the great advantage to all on the roads of the increased visibility that headlights offer. It is always best to make yourself as visible as possible to all who use our roadways. I wish everyone a safe and happy 2016.

Water conservation doesn’t equal money savings

Like water customers throughout the Central Coast and many other parts of California, Scotts Valley Water District ratepayers have responded to the historic drought by sharply reducing their water use even as El Niño rains fall across our service area. Although El Niño is bringing some relief to the parched soil, it will take longer than a single year for our thirsty watersheds to recover. Water conservation is still necessary to assist in the recuperation of our watersheds.

Hot home buying marks end of 2015

I went from being a renter to a homeowner in 1984 because I got sick and tired of those friendly little notices in my mailbox every six months cheerfully notifying me that the rent on my apartment was going up another fifty bucks a month.

Crab conditions improve, not Harbor dredge

Local ocean fishing has been big news and mostly consisting of negative press. The combination of crab closures due to domoic acid counts and the Santa CruzHarbor shoaled up has created great hardship for local fishermen.

Clearing palliative care confusion

There seems to be some confusion when it comes to understanding the difference between palliative care and hospice. They are both distinctive medical disciplines and often work together.
