Several years ago I was invited to tour a beautiful garden in the hills above Scott Valley High School. Robby Frank was more than eager to share his techniques for gardening in deer country. He was also in a personal battle with gophers and moles and I affectionately bestowed upon him the title, serial mole killer. I am happy to report that Robby has won the war on all fronts. His garden is more lush than ever, and with that comes the ongoing dilemma of saving water in the landscape especially in this time of drought. He solved the problem by installing a Smart Irrigation Controller and has been so pleased with the results he's on a Smart Irrigation crusade to educate fellow gardeners. Here's his story.

There is nothing quite as central to Bonny Doon as the elementary school. In an effort to fund essential science, music and art programs at Bonny Doon Elementary, the Bonny Doon Community School Foundation is preparing to host its annual art, wine and brew festival this weekend.

On Wednesday, August 26, at 3:00 p.m., the Scotts Valley Water District opened their Recycled Water Fill Station. The “Station” is located behind the Scotts Valley Library at 251 Kings Village Road in Scotts Valley.According to J.M. Brown, spokesperson for SVWD, recycled water is wastewater that has been through multiple treatment processes to assure that it meets the California Department of Public Health quality and safety standards. To date, SVWD has delivered about 530 million gallons of recycled water to customers. Brown says that it is important to know that “SVWD is a regional leader in the distribution of recycled water.Scotts Valley residents may receive up to 250 gallons of recycled water per day free of charge. The pumping schedule is: 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and on Saturdays it is 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.Receiving the free recycled water should defray the negative impact of drought by using the water to irrigate gardens and landscaping. The Church of San Agustin, nestled in the hills above Santa Cruz, is named after the original Mexican Land Grant, “San Agustin Ranchero,” which comprises all of the Scotts Valley area. The parish was established in 1969, three years after the small community of Scotts Valley incorporated into a city. A house on the property was remodeled to become the parish rectory. The first Mass was celebrated in a field next this house on June 8, 1969 by our first pastor, Father Michael MacDonald. Mass was also celebrated at the Scotts Valley School and then in an enlarged converted barn/garage on the property until ground breaking for the new multipurpose building began in September of 1969. The building was completed the following year in September of 1970. Our beautiful Spanish mission style cross was fashioned by the San Agustin Men’s Committee from a Santa Cruz Mountain redwood tree. Its dedication in April 1971 marked the first Easter in the new chapel. The Sante Fe train bell hanging over the church was given to the parish by the Weinmann family and installed in April of 1972 and later dedicated to the memory of our first pastor, Father Mac.
