Helping Others as a Way to Soothe Ourselves

It has been a challenging time for our family with four tragedies in six months. A month ago, my cousin's house burned down to the ground. We were with him and his wife when they got the call (at the memorial service of the latest death in our family), so we followed them to their property. There was nothing left! No partial wall, no bits of furniture, absolutely nothing! This is the same family who tragically lost their son-in-law (at age 32) in December. They are all still grieving, and now this.

Missing Korean War hero receives honor, memorial at Felton Cemetery

Nearly sixty-four years after Master Sgt. Donald “Red” Moran was reported missing in action during the Korean War, the Boulder Creek native and Silver Star winner will at last be honored with a memorial at the Felton Cemetery.

Helen Alice SaavedraNovember 14,1938 - August 2, 2015  On August 2, Helen Saavedra, 76, of Boulder Creek passed away unexpectedly in her home. She is survived by her lovely daughters — Carmen (Steven) Vera, Diana Saavedra and Valerie (Anthony) Saavedra-Do; her six grandchildren — Amanda, Rey, Danielle, Michael, Lauren, and Adam; and four great-grandchildren; her sisters — Sue Walters and Marie Barber; ex-husband-friend — Ray Saavedra and her beloved dog Charlie. Helen was known to many as “Grandma Helen.” She was a kind, gracious and loving woman who had a zest for life. She was a sage and true friend and lived her Christian values to the fullest. She spread joy wherever she went.She volunteered at Valley Churches and was a Red Hatter. Her family was her life and she was a tremendous Mom.Helen’s legacy is as bright and beautiful as she was. A touching and beautiful family Celebration of Life was held at the Junction Park. You were a beloved member of our community, Grandma Helen, and we will miss you beyond words so rest in peace, dear friend.

At the Thursday, Dec. 4 meeting of the San Lorenzo Valley Water District, the board of directors announced the hiring of Brian C. Lee as the new district manager.

SLV Water District invasive control plan uses best management practices

We support the San Lorenzo Valley Water District Plan to control Silver Wattle Acacia, French Broom, and Portuguese Broom at the Olympia Wellfield site. We are environmental scientists, each with over 20 years of experience restoring coastal California ecosystems. We consider the proposed methods consistent with best management practices to remove these invasive species, conserve the threatened Santa Cruz sand hills habitat, and minimize risks to water quality.
