New Faces

Wiley Benjamin Scott Beasley, an 8-pound 3-ounce boy, was born to Tessa Sierra Wolfe-Beasley and Joseph Benjamin Beasley of Boulder Creek at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz. He was born at 8:08 p.m. on Nov. 10, 2014.

Editorial: Kudos to the valleys

A number of recent news items have reminded us why we’re glad to live in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Here are three that stood out:

Mount Madonna claims its vengeance on SLV

Last season the Mount Madonna boy’s volleyball team fell in the league finals to San Lorenzo Valley High School, losing their shot at the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League title. This year the Hawks earned their revenge on the Cougars beating them 25-17, 25-23, 25-21 to capture the league tournament. The game was played May 6 at Aptos High.

Mountain Gardener: A Beautiful Garden Doesn’t Need A Lot Of Water

Has the hot, dry, windy weather made your garden look like mid-summer? Our meager spring rains have all but disappeared from the soil and what hasn't evaporated the weeds have taken. The local water companies all have water conservation requirements that began last month. I'm getting lots of calls and emails asking for advice about the best way to use water efficiently so the garden doesn't look like the Sahara this summer. I'm helping others redesign their gardens with an eye towards ongoing water conservation.
