Wine lover: For the perfect dinner, match wines with Thanksgiving fare

Thanksgiving is upon us, my friends. As a man who likes his food and certainly likes his wine, this turns out to be my favorite holiday.

It’s the law: Recent law a boon for vulnerable kids

I had a plain vanilla childhood. Thank goodness. Ours was a middle-class neighborhood with little crime or drama. Even though many families, including my own, went through the anguish of divorce, all the kids I knew had a family to fall back on. That idyll colored my vision of the world.

Gardener: New introductions portend a colorful 2011

I know this gardening season isn't over yet, but I'm already looking forward to next spring and all the fabulous new plant introductions that will be available for our gardens and patios. Some are already being grown on a limited basis by the wholesale growers, while others won't become available until 2011. Recently, I had the opportunity to view up-close and personal some of these new unique perennials, shrubs and grasses. It's exciting to envision them in our own gardens.

Let’s go fishin’: Changes in fishing season reflected on local docks

The weather is not the only thing that changes in the fall. Many fishing seasons close and others open at this time of year. Sport fishing, commercial fishing and even our local markets change in regard to what local seafood we can catch or buy.

Letter: Plea for Bear Creek help

Who exactly do we contact about getting that mess at the base of Bear Creek Road fixed? I have been turning up Bear Creek from Highway 9 nearly daily for more than 23 years now, and the pavement has been terrible at that intersection the whole time. Filling those potholes once in a blue moon with a little Quikcrete, which quickly disappears, is just not working. Please! My little car is very tired of bottoming out there, day after day, week after week.

Commentary: Time for some political homework

In my unofficial poll — well, while talking with friends since Tuesday’s election, anyway — it seems the one thing all voters have in common is a sense of relief that the interminable (and disgusting) political attack ads have ended. Gosh, wouldn’t it be refreshing — oh yeah, and informative — if candidates ran on their résumés? Firing zingers at other office seekers isn’t really one of the qualifications we were looking for.

Talk about money: Home prices scrape the barrel

The housing market in and around Scotts Valley can be broken down into three categories: the good, the bad and the ugly.
