It’s the Law: Want to buy a beach?

About a year ago I wrote a column about Martin’s Beach near Half Moon Bay, an idyllic crescent shaped beach that many consider the most beautiful in San Mateo County. A billionaire named Vinod Khosla bought all the land fronting the beach and gated off the only road that leads to Martin’s Beach. Since the beach has 75 foot cliffs on both the north and south ends, the only realistic access is via that one road. A few foolish people have suggested that people can come in by way of the ocean. They have obviously never had the entertaining experience of landing or launching a boat through the breakers. Seaworthy individuals do it, but grandma may object to this form of exercise.

The Mountain Gardener: The music of the garden

Each time I'm in my garden it's a different experience. The familiar buzz of hummingbird wings brings a smile to my face. Sometimes it's the silence that gets my attention. Where are the chirping songbirds or the raucous scolding of the jays? Where is the wind, the rustling of the forest grass leaves? Other times the quaking of the redwood boughs a hundred feet up makes the garden come alive like giant wind chimes. Sound adds dimension to the garden.

Beehive, the Musical at Cabrillo

If you’ve got a thing for hairspray, hit songs and boots made for walkin’, head to Cabrillo’s Crocker Theater in Aptos to catch “Beehive: A Musical Tribute to the Women of Rock.” Running from June 27 thru July 14, New York-based Director and Choreographer Gary John La Rosa turns up the volume (in both hair and sound) to track the divas of music from 1960-1970. This is La Rosa's first time ever working for Cabrillo Stage; given the chance to work with Artistic Director and Musical Director John Nordgren, La Rosa jumped at the opportunity, and is thrilled to pair with Nordgren (who plays saxophone in the Cabrillo performance, and also toured with the national production of “Beehive”).
