To Beef or Not to Beef

“I enjoy cooking with wine,  sometimes I even put it in the food I’m cooking.”  - Julia Child Give me a good old American-style beef pot roast, with all its dark wine-rich drippings and a crusty French roll, and I am in heaven. In just one week, my...

Scotts Valley resident debuts solo comedy show to support local theater

The phrase “Only the truth is funny” has been uttered in various iterations by famous authors: Sarah Frances Brown, Mark Twain and Jonathan Swift. It is, perhaps, most recently applied to the writings and adventures of one Clay Hausmann. Hausmann, 54, lives in Scotts Valley....

From Dusk to Dawn Protecting Scotts Valley

When word of the CZU fire came around, it was all hands on deck. The term “mutual aid” doesn't begin to capture the depths of what that actually entails. The night our 12 officer force had to evacuate 11,000 residents out of Scotts Valley wouldn't have been remotely possible without the assistance of hundreds of officers from around the Bay Area.

The Mountain Gardener: Keep your indoor plants alive during cold winter

I miss the Christmas tree and decorations that bring color to the house over the holidays. After they're packed away for another year and the tree recycled it looks a bit bare around here. The houseplants get their favorite places back now near the windows. This an important month for them when the garden is asleep. I want them to look great but Mother Nature delivers darker skies and less daylight hours. Even though they are still green they are taking a break and don't grow much over the dark days of winter. Don't become a clueless houseplant killer. Remember houseplants clean the air. We need them.

Nature Friendly: Rethinking a walk in the rain

“A rainy day is the perfect time for a walk in the woods. I always thought so myself; the Maine woods never seem so fresh and alive as in wet weather. Then all the needles on the evergreens wear a sheath of silver; ferns seem to have grown to almost tropical lushness and every leaf has its edging of crystal drops. Strangely colored fungi — mustard-yellow and apricot and scarlet — are pushing out of the leaf mold and all the lichens and the mosses have come alive with green and silver freshness,” wrote Rachel Carson in “The Sense of Wonder.”
