David Leland is new reporter at Press Banner

A new reporter has joined the Press Banner staff, David Leland, of Scotts Valley.Editor Barry Holtzclaw announced that Leland will be a general assignment reporter, with special emphasis on Scotts Valley and business reporting.

New Faces

n Kaden James Thomsen was born at 3:27 a.m. Sept. 2, 2011, to Soquel residents Kassandra Eirene Teegardin and Erik John Thomsen, a San Lorenzo Valley High School graduate. Kaden weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces when he arrived at Sutter Maternity and Surgery Center in Santa Cruz. His paternal grandmother, Carole Hatch, lives in Ben Lomond.

Your Health: Symptomless diverticulosis a surprising diagnosis

Many people these days who are having routine colon screening exams, are being told that they have a condition called diverticulosis which is the presence of small pockets or pouches in the wall of the large bowel found just above the rectum. Risk factors for diverticulosis include inadequate intake of dietary fiber, lack of exercise, and aging. Diverticula are found in up to 60 percent of people by age 60, and the percentage keeps climbing with age.

Are the Dog Days of Summer Getting you Down?

They’re called the Dog Days of summer. You know those sultry days with the hottest summer temperatures. The Romans associated the hot weather between July 24th and August 24th with the star Sirius which they considered to be the “Dog Star” because it’s the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (Large Dog). The Old Farmer’s Almanac uses slightly different dates but the Dog Days of summer are definitely here.
