River and Road Cleanup volunteers sought

With summer winding down, it’s time, once again, to clean up the mess that inevitably accumulates along the roads and waterways of the San Lorenzo Valley.
As part of the California Coastal Commission’s statewide Coastal Cleanup Day, volunteers for the 27^th annual Al Haynes Memorial River and Road Cleanup will gather on Saturday, Sept. 21 to apply a little spit shine to the valley’s rural communities.
The annual cleanup, which the Valley Women’s Club began in 1986, includes partners from the SLV Water District, Santa Cruz County Department of Public Works, SLV Redemption and Recycling Centers, Save Our Shores, and SLV Core.
David Wright, director of the of the SLV Redemption and Recycling Centers, said that volunteers are asked to meet between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at four designated locations, from which they will be sent to designated “hot spots” in Felton, Ben Lomond, Boulder Creek, and Lompico — the first year that community has participated.
“The biggest new thing is that Lompico has joined the effort,” Wright said. “We’ve got groups ready to go.”
He said that at each site, there will be a county-provided trash bin, snacks, gloves and trash bags.
“Last year we brought in 1,533 pounds of recyclables, 644 pounds of trash, and 1,800 cigarette butts,” Wright said.
The four volunteer bases are located as follows:
– Felton
Covered Bridge Park, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
– Lompico
