FELTON — San Lorenzo Valley High awarded 163 seniors their diplomas on Friday with hundreds of family and community members gathered around the students to wish them well.
The hot sun overhead had many seniors sweating it out as they waited for their reward during the outdoors ceremony. Many of those watching had set up shade tents and made a picnic out of the day.
The ceremony was a full production with Masters of Ceremony Abigale Sherman and Jordan Peabody leading everyone through a program that included speeches by Superintendent Julie Haff, senior addresses by Haley Kammeier and Julian Espinoza, a Salutatorian’s Address by Anna Maxwell and Lauren Smith, a Valedictorian’s Address by Madeleine Melcher and Michaela Sanchez and music by students Eliot Andrews, who played guitar and sang “Imagine,” and Rebecca Hargraves, London Murray, Jennifer Paolini and Sophie Widman singing the popular hit “Count on Me.”
Teacher Laura Shipley shared her feelings about the class, which she told the audience had nicknamed her “Shipdawg.”
“That’s D-A-W-G,” she said, before telling everyone how much she would miss this group of seniors.
Members of SLVH Class of ’14 will be attending more than 40 different colleges spread across the country from Seton Hall University in Pennsylvania to Oregon State University.
