A group of Santa Cruz High School students and Scotts Valley Vice Mayor Dene Bustichi constructed a storage shed on the Scotts Valley High School campus last weekend.
The 8-foot-by-16-foot shed was designed and constructed by students in the Santa Cruz County Regional Occupational Program Construction Technology Class at Santa Cruz High which Bustichi teaches.
“It is for Beth Hollenbeck’s band to store their instruments,” said Bustichi, who owns BCI Builders in Scotts Valley.
Hollenbeck teaches music at the high school and has grown the program over the past several years. The music classes are situated in a portable classroom without a place to store instruments.
The Santa Cruz students designed and prefabricated the shed during class time, then had the opportunity — for extra credit — to help with the actual construction of the shed on Saturday, April 19 at Scotts Valley High.
Students Jake Hufnagel, Maya Fried-Purdie, Eric Near, Spencer Hilyard and Caber Russell helped with the construction, along with Bustichi’s brother Eugene and son Giovanni.
This is Bustichi’s second year teaching the class that teaches participants basic and intermediate building techniques. The ROP program is funded through the Santa Cruz County Office of Education.
