A high-speed chase ensued in Scotts Valley last Sunday, Dec. 14, resulting in the arrest of a Santa Cruz woman.
California Highway Patrol Officer Bradley Sadek said that the incident occurred around 6:35 p.m. when a patrol officer observed a Toyota Camry driving over the speed limit on southbound Highway 17 north of Santa Cruz Ridge.
The officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver failed to yield and a pursuit began.
The 33-year-old driver, Hieu Mgoc Luong, reached speeds of over 80 miles per hour and exited onto Mount Hermon Road.
A Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputy observed the car and was able to deploy a hollow spike strip on Mount Hermon Road north of Kings Village Road.
At that point, Sadek said, two CHP officers were following the Camry, which drove over the strip causing the tires on the right side to deflate.
The chase led to the section of Mount Hermon Road between Scotts Valley and Felton, where the car then turned off onto an access road located on the 7400 block of East Zayante Road and was stopped abruptly by a chain link fence.
An officer’s patrol vehicle stopped behind the Toyota and Luong allegedly put the vehicle into reverse and accelerated toward the patrol car, damaging the front of the vehicle on the right side.
The woman was arrested and booked into Santa Cruz County Jail on charges of evading an officer, driving under the influence, and assault with a deadly weapon.
