Kay Mendoza was recently awarded the Hometown Hero Award surrounded by staff and students at Coast Redwood Charter School.
The Modern Woodmen fraternal organization gives the award to people who give back to the community and demonstrate bravery or volunteerism.
In 1997 Mendoza — who is the supervising teacher at Coast Redwood — started filling the need for an alternative program in the San Lorenzo Unified School District. Today, Coast Redwood is an accredited public high school and educational core of creativity and achievements.
“Kay recognizes the public education system needs alternative options and has worked tirelessly for a rich and relevant academic experience for students,” Rhonda Schlosser, SLVUSD Charter School Administrator said.
George Wiley, SLVUSD board trustee and former trustee president, agreed.
“Cathy and I have three sons, two of whom attended Coast Redwood High School. Kay’s remarkable talent as a teacher, counselor, and friend gave both our sons something that had eluded them until she came into their lives — the ability to realize their individual pathways to success.”
Mendoza’s dreams don’t end here. She is currently collaborating to complete her ten-year vision to install outdoor benches for the Fall Creek Amphitheater.
“Bringing benches will allow students to comfortably enjoy the stage in nature for the yearly Coast Redwood Senior Graduation and will provide necessary seating to hold inspirational tri-campus outdoor classes in the Redwood Grove,” Mendoza said.
Mendoza said people can still donate to or volunteer on the bench project — which is supported by Kusum Tracy/Charter Boosters; Brenda Tealer, agent, Modern Woodmen; Katelyn Praly 4-H Senior project; Kristin Praly, youth coordinator, Modern Woodmen — by emailing

or donating at DonorsChoose.org. The work will take place on March 26 and April 2.
