A controversial plan to redraw the boundaries of Santa Cruz County’s five supervisorial districts is set to come before the Board of Supervisors tomorrow morning, Tuesday, Aug. 23.
Both of the proposed plans call for Scotts Valley – currently entirely within the borders of the Fifth District – to be split in two between the First and Fifth districts.
According to the proposal, about 2,028 Scotts Valley residents east of Highway 17 in the Granite Creek and El Rancho areas will be in the First District’s jurisdiction – cutting them off from Scotts Valley. The First district includes Soquel and Live Oak.
The Fifth district population numbers would remain similar as 1,438 residents of the Pasatiempo Drive and Sims Road area and 436 residents of the Glenwood Drive and Mountain Charlie Road area would be moved from the First District into the Fifth District.
Scotts Valley City Councilman Jim Reed has called the plan to split Scotts Valley unnecessary. He argues that keeping the Glenwood area in the First District and not splitting Scotts Valley actually enables the Fifth District to be closer to the proscribed population goals set by the county.
Reed sent out an e-mail to constituents encouraging anyone with concerns to attend the Board of Supervisors’ meeting, which is scheduled to discuss redistricting at 10:45 a.m. at the County building in Santa Cruz.
