A small residential fire was quickly contained by Scotts Valley and Santa Cruz firefighters this afternoon.
The fire was reported at 2:34 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon on the 1200 block of Whispering Pines Drive in Scotts Valley.
Firefighters arrived and quickly extinguished the blaze which appeared to have begun inside the single story home. No one was home at the time, but a family that had begun renting the house about 1 week ago arrived home and reported the fire.
Firefighters from Santa Cruz and Scotts Valley arrived in minutes and performed a quick interior attack and limited much of the damage to one bedroom. It was later determined that the fire began in a bedroom toward the front of the house.
The house sustained moderate fire, smoke and water damage. Property loss was estimated at $25,000 to $50,000 by the district.
The house is currently under renovation, a family member told a reporter at the scene.
A cat was inside the house and appeared to have escaped safely.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but fire officials say it appeared to be accidental.
