Scotts Valley Grand Prix two weeks away

The second Scotts Valley Grand Prix is quickly approaching, and organizer Mark Davis is excited about the continued growth of Scotts Valley’s homegrown cycling race.
“Last year, the riders said it was a fast course, and there were no accidents,” Davis said. “People were jazzed.”
The festivities and racing will take place from 1 to 9 p.m. May 15 in a loop that includes Scotts Valley Drive and El Pueblo Road. The race’s expo — which includes a kids fun zone and sponsorship booths — will be in the Canepa Design parking lot facing Scotts Valley Drive.
Easton-Bell Sports, based in Scotts Valley, signed on as the principal sponsor of the race this year, adding another big name to the event.
The event is geared toward women’s cyclists, and perhaps the most competitive race will be the Elite Women’s race, which will feature prominent cyclists including last year’s winner, Nichole Wangsgard.
The women’s purse is the largest this year at $3,000, and will feature a field of up to 120 riders.
“We want to be able to support women in cycling and children in cycling,” Davis said. “We’re trying to get more kids and women on board. There’s potential for massive growth there.
Davis sees the race growing into a regular stop for women competing at a high level.
“For women, cycling is really their second job,” Davis said. “They are moms, (professionals like doctors, lawyers, engineers) or business owners. It’s a whole different part of racing. But the best of the best are just as fun and just as fast as the men.”
The day will also feature a race for those ages 3 through 9 at 3:30 p.m., and eight other race categories for men and women of various ages.
