A 23-year-old recidivist from Scotts Valley will head to trial on charges of robbery next week, pending the outcome of a confirmation hearing set for Friday, March 18.
Kevin Daniel Sharp, who has an extensive history of drug, petty theft and burglary convictions, pleaded not guilty to charges of robbery and parole violation after he was arrested the evening of Feb. 9 at Kmart in Scotts Valley.
The arrest followed reports that a man had stolen a camera and had threatened to “cut” a loss-prevention worker.
Sharp was confirmed as the suspect after he was identified in a police lineup.
Lt. John Hohmann of the Scotts Valley Police Department said that Sharp has been charged with robbery because of the threats allegedly made to the Kmart employee.
Though the robbery charge against Sharp carries a required bail amount of $50,000, the parole violation charge means he may not post bail and will remain in Santa Cruz County Jail through the duration of the court case.
The prosecutor, Assistant District Attorney Gretchen Brock, confirmed that Sharp is a parolee and that he has a strike on his record for previous convictions.
Sharp is represented by public defender Jon Minsloff. His trial is expected to begin Monday morning, March 21.
