Get ready to experience the magic of Disney’s “The Lion King Jr.,” brought to life by the talented students of the Scotts Valley Middle School Drama Program.
The curtain rises at the SVMS Theater on Friday, Feb. 21, at 7pm, followed by two performances on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 2pm (understudy show) and at 7pm.
This 60-minute musical, specially adapted for middle school performers, brings the beloved story of Simba’s journey to the stage, featuring iconic songs and stunning visuals inspired by the Broadway production and the classic 1994 Disney film.
The production includes nearly 60 students, from cast to crew, with every role—onstage and behind the scenes—guided by the heart and dedication of Scotts Valley Middle School’s drama teacher and director, Alexie Neall.
For Neall, this show is more than a performance—it’s a celebration of the students, their talents and the power of community.
“I knew this was going to be the show for this cast,” said Neall. “We had a small preview at the Multicultural Fair in September, and many of the cast members just happened to be in my class this trimester. My production team and I felt that this was our moment.”

The production dazzles with vibrant movement and dance, thanks to stunning choreography by Scotts Valley Middle School history teacher Andy Stenros. Stenros has brought incredible energy and creativity to the show, blending traditional African-inspired movements with powerful ensemble numbers.
“Andy’s choreography brings such life and storytelling to the stage,” Neall shared. “The students have truly connected with every step, and you can feel their joy and passion through every movement.”
Adding to the production’s artistic brilliance are the stunning character masks, designed and created by eighth-grade student Kara Saiki. From Simba’s regal mane to Scar’s menacing features, each mask is a handcrafted masterpiece that captures the heart of the characters. Saiki’s creativity and hard work have brought a unique, personal touch to the show’s visual storytelling.
“Kara’s artistry has taken our production to the next level,” said Neall. “Her designs are not only beautiful but deeply thoughtful—every mask tells a story. The audience will be amazed by the talent and heart behind her creations.”
With breathtaking masks, elaborate props and rich themes, “The Lion King Jr.” is one of the most technically challenging productions to grace the Scotts Valley Middle School stage. But for Neall, the show’s impact goes far beyond the technical elements.
“I wanted to bring one of the longest-running musicals on Broadway to our school because it’s more than a show—it’s a chance for our entire community to come together,” Neall said. “This story is about family, finding your voice, and embracing who you are. Our students are living those themes every day as they grow, collaborate and create something truly magical together.”

This year’s production is made even more special thanks to the generosity of the local community.
“Thanks to a huge grant from Omega Nu of Santa Cruz, a new lighting system was installed merely weeks ago with the help of the Scotts Valley Community Theater Guild,” Neall shared. “This incredible gift not only brightens our stage but also empowers our students to shine even brighter.”
This performance is a testament to the power of the arts to inspire, unite and uplift a community. Scotts Valley Middle School invites friends, family and neighbors to come celebrate the passion, talent and heart of these young performers.
