Scotts Valley disc golfer Jonathan Baldwin was tired of playing second fiddle to San Francisco’s Patrick Brown.
Baldwin had finished one or two strokes behind Brown in the past five tournaments in California and Oregon the two had competed in.
“His game has really picked up over the last year,” Baldwin said after the tournament. “We were just a few strokes apart.”
Then, last week, Baldwin beat his nemesis and the rest of the field in the Professional Disc Golf World Championships to win the five-day tournament by five strokes. His five-round total of 397 outdid second-place finisher Phil Arthur and Brown, who finished ninth overall.
“This has really opened a lot of new doors for me,” Baldwin said. “New doors keep opening every day.”
Baldwin met with his sponsor, Disc Golf Association, this week to discuss the opportunities that come with the world championship win. Baldwin also took home $3,600, the first-place winnings in the masters division.
For the first time, the tournament was held locally in the Monterey Bay area from Aug. 7 to Saturday, Aug. 13.
Nate Doss of Capitola won the open division and the grand prize of $7,000, finishing with an impressive seven-stroke win. A total of 432 disc golfers from around the world competed in the tournament.
