Sarah Reyes was Scotts Valley HS' winning pitcher in Falcons 11-0 league win over the visiting St. Francis CC Catholic HS last Tuesday.

Featuring a mixed roster of upperclassman veterans and underclassman rookies, the Scotts Valley High softball team has its collective eyes set on the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League championship.
“We’re very optimistic, we have a really good team,” said Head Coach Jacki Kain. “I think this year is gong to pan out well.”
The Falcon girls, who began the 2015 SCCAL campaign with a 11-0 win against St. Francis on Tuesday, feature a strong core led by senior pitchers Sigrid Holtrop and Sarah Reyes.
“They’re both multiple-position players and they have great offensive bats,” Kain said. “We’re strong throughout the lineup and we’re looking to take it all.”
She said the team, which finished second in SCCAL last year and was eliminated in the second round of the Central Coast Section playoffs, is well set up to make a deep run into the postseason.
“I think we’re strong all the way around,” Kain said. “We’ve got an awesome defense, we’ve got an outfield to die for, everybody has great bats, and we’ve got good pitching.”
She added that a strong freshman class has added a powerful jolt to the Scotts Valley roster — particularly freshman second baseman Jordan Armstrong, who “can play pretty much anywhere.”
“We’ve got a good freshman group that came in,” Kain said. “It’s a great mix, it’s rare … rarely do you have upperclassmen and lowerclassmen gel and intermix as well as these girls do.”
“They’re a unique group. This group is a lot of fun hardworking girls – they’re the future of the program.”
Up next in SCCAL play, the Falcon girls will head to Soquel take on the Knights at 4:30 on Thursday.
