The Scotts Valley High boys 4-by-400-meter relay team of Brad Hartman, Kyle McNulty, Aldin Barrett and Steven Haas fell just short of qualifying for the state track and field meet.
The Falcons ran a school-record three minutes, 23.35 seconds at the Central Coast Section finals on May 29 but finished fourth in the final, behind Independence High School’s time of 3:22.77. A third-place finish would have buoyed the quartet into this weekend’s state meet.
The Falcon boys 4-by-100 team of Haas, Hartman, Barrett and Blake Jurich was edged by rival Santa Cruz by .01 seconds and finished fifth with a time of 43.20.
Santa Cruz anchor on the 4-by-100 team, Zeke Sanders, was an individual qualifier for state in the 100- and 200-meter races.
SLV freshman Amanda Lackides cleared 10 feet in the pole vault and finished fourth. She lost in a jump-off to Aptos’ freshman Theresa Vinson, who cleared 10-03 to earn the third and final berth at the state championships.
San Lorenzo Valley senior Sarah Edwards finished seventh in the 200-meter dash, capping her season with a time of 25.97.
