Seagate to shutter Singapore plant

Scotts Valley-based Seagate Technologies announced it will close its Singapore hard-disk manufacturing plant and lay off 2,000 workers as a result.
“This closure and relocation is part of the company’s ongoing focus on cost efficiencies in all areas of its business and is intended to facilitate leveraging manufacturing investments across fewer sites,” the company announced in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Tuesday, Aug. 4.
Seagate announced $2.35 billion in revenue in the fourth quarter, which ended July 3, but an $81 million net loss from restructuring costs.
SV Sports Center open through December
The Scotts Valley City Council voted this week to extend a lease to the Slawinksi family to continue running the Scotts Valley Sports Center until mid-December.
The city, which purchased the Sports Center as the space to build a new library, does not have plans to start building until December or January.
The lease will create $25,000 in revenue for the city’s redevelopment agency and will allow sports leagues to continue through the fall at the sports center.
Meanwhile, hockey advocates in Scotts Valley continue to work on a new rink location.
