Christmas Project

Second Harvest Food Bank brought public servants and community volunteers together on Monday to make sure families in need are able to have a Christmas dinner.
The mission of Second Harvest is to end hunger and malnutrition through food donation and community education. The countywide network of agencies and programs provides meals for approximately 55,000 people each month.
The Christmas Project was started in 1978 as a way to provide meals and gifts for migrant labor families who harvest local crops but are mostly out of work during the winter. Each of the roughly 200 families will receive a box containing chicken, cereals, tuna, cooking oil, canned goods, and other staples, as well as a 20 to 30 lb. bag of fresh produce.
Firefighters from local departments, county supervisors and community volunteers all met at locations in Watsonville and Aptos to dish out the end result of generous donations from all over Santa Cruz County.
