The Regional Artisans Association’s second Scotts Valley Mural in a Day project will be painted this Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19 in the Kings Village Shopping Center.
The 40-foot, by 11-foot mural will be painted on the side of Nob Hill’s building next to CaliStyle, 222-G Mount Hermon Road, in Scotts Valley.
Titled “Remembering Kings Market, Circa 1968,” the mural design pays homage to the original Kings Market and to the Ow Family who founded the market in 1965 as one of the first supermarkets in Santa Cruz County. It was the first business in the Kings Village shopping center which the Ow’s own and operate.
“We’re really excited for this mural because of the history and family connection involved in it,” said Benjamin Ow, who manages the center. “It is meaningful because of the site and the recognition it will give our grandparents.”
Ow said that from a personal standpoint, he’s impressed by the hard work and investment Dawn Teall and her mother Pam Nielsen have put into Scotts Valley Artisans and the Mural-in-a-Day concept.
Close to 50 artists and community members will help complete the mural over a two day period, Teall said. The Ow mural is the second Mural-in-a-Day the Artisan’s will have completed. The first is a 100-foot by 17-foot mural depicting the motion picture history of Scotts Valley on the side of the Cinelux building in Kings Village.
The new mural is designed by University of California, Santa Cruz art major Aidan McCarthy, who will serve as the Master Muralist for the event.
It will honor George and Emily Ow who, in 1965, purchased the 33 acre Dettling Dairy Farm that’s now the shopping Center. The Ows opened Kings Market in 1968 and operated the market for many years. The mural pays homage to the original Kings Market and to the Ow Family, who have lived in the county since the 1930s and are known for decades of business and philanthropic contributions to the community.
According to Teall, the goal of Mural-in-a-Day is to highlight the creativity and talent in the county, involve the ‘non-artist’ community in helping create the art and to help make public art a centerpiece of local downtown business districts while highlighting the local history.
Teall said Bruno’s BBQ, the Scotts Valley Arts Commission, Modern Woodman Fraternal Financial, Ideal Hair, Cali-Style, Erik’s DeliCafe, Hinde Chiropractic, Choi’s Tae Kwon Do, Winchester Auto, Ace/Scarborough Hardware, Bean Creek Studio, Fuse Clothing Consignment and the Cinelux Theater have all helped sponsor the mural.
