The Scotts Valley Performing Arts Youth Shakespeare Program will stage “The Tempest: Revisited” and “Journey Fantastique: Art and Poetry in Motion” at the Bethany University Theater next weekend.
Local poet Trish Black Melehan adapted Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” for the theater group, setting it in medieval Japan and incorporating Japanese language, culture and music into the show.
Local harpist Alexandra Romanoff and musicians from Watsonville Taiko Drums will make appearances throughout the show.
The Youth Shakespeare Program’s second show, “Journey Fantastique: Art and Poetry in Motion,” is a multimedia performance. It’s a collaboration of paintings by Santa Cruz artist James Carl Aschbacher, stories told in verse about the artwork by Melehan, and lively ragtime music performed by local pianist Samantha Allott.
Both shows will be performed July 14 through 17 at Bethany University Theater, 800 Bethany Drive, in Scotts Valley.
