Bethany University split a doubleheader against Minnesota’s St. Catherine University on Wednesday, March 31. The Bruins fell in extra innings in the first contest, 3-2, before rallying to a 9-1 victory in the second game against their non-conference foe.
Bethany is 1-7 in the California Pacific Coast Conference and 3-20 overall. They are tied for last in the conference with Menlo College.
Parents launch Scotts Valley turf effort
A grassroots Web site to raise cash and educate the community about installing a turf field at Scotts Valley High School was launched last week. The site is http://svhs-turf.ning.com/.
As of Thursday, there were 76 members and more than $5,300 in pledges toward the group’s goal.
D.A.R.E. golf tournament on tap
The 13th annual Scotts Valley Peace Officer’s Association D.A.R.E Golf tournament is scheduled for May 14 at Valley Gardens Golf Course in Scotts Valley.
Cost is $60 per player, and proceeds will support Drug Abuse Resistance Education for fifth-graders in Scotts Valley. Registration is due April 16.

SLV runners show well at Stanford
Four San Lorenzo Valley High track runners combined to run the 12th fastest time in the nation in the 4-x-800 meter relay at the Stanford Invitational last week. The team of Allan Hetke (1 minute, 59.66 seconds), Cody Johnson (1:59.46), Alejandro Torres (1:59.39) and Matt Shisler (2:00.24) placed fourth overall at the meet and will run at the Arcadia Invitational, one of the top events nationwide, on April 9 and 10.
SLV softball league under way
After three games, the undefeated Steelheads have taken the early lead in the A Division standings of the IOOF-SLV Coed recreational softball league. They are closely followed by the Mt. Mechanics and Tsunami, both 2-1.
The B league has a three-way tie between Monty’s Log Cabin, Mount Hermon and the Coyotes, all 2-1.
Games are played Sundays at Michael Gray Field on Graham Hill Road.
