The San Lorenzo Valley boys wrestling team defeated Scotts Valley High, 48-21, in the final regular-season Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League meet of the season.
The win Tuesday, Feb. 9, was a tune-up for the league tournament, which took place after press time Thursday, Feb. 11, at Scotts Valley.
Against Scotts Valley, SLV completed six pins — by Michael Kraft at 103 pounds, Patrick Doran at 112 pounds, Melissa Allen at 130 pounds, Aidan Robinson at 135 pounds, Zach Wambaugh at 140 pounds and Cody Rodebaugh at 160 pounds.
SLV improved to 4-1 on the season, with its only loss to league-leading Aptos High.
The classic match of the day may have been between Zach Newberry and Alex Salisbury, wrestling at 189 pounds. Salisbury, who usually wrestles at 171 pounds, matched the bigger Newberry blow for blow, and the pair was tied 8-8 after the customary three periods.
With only two seconds left in the 1-minute overtime period, Newberry took down Salisbury, earning two points for a dramatic victory.
Scotts Valley wrestlers David Nice (152) and David Smith (215) each earned pins for the Falcons, who dropped to 2-3 on the season.
After the league finals, qualifying wrestlers will compete in the Central Coast Section finals Feb. 19 and 20 at Independence High School in San Jose. The top two CCS finishers will wrestle at the California State Championships at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield on March 5 and 6.
