San Lorenzo Valley lineman Robert Scruggs was named king and Mariah Miles queen after the Cougars’ 60-51 homecoming defeat at the hands of Watsonville High on Saturday, Sept. 26.
The Cougars (1-2-1) will open the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League season Saturday, Oct. 3, when they host St. Francis High School at 2 p.m.
Last weekend, with temperatures reaching into the mid-90s, offense was the name of the game for both teams.
By halftime, the score was 29-26 in favor of the Cougars after two touchdowns by Kyle Todd, a 55-yard touchdown catch by Luke Roberts on a throw by Zach Newberry, and a 38-yard interception return for a touchdown by Trevor Romele.
In the second half, however, the Cougars could not slow Watsonville receiver Fernando Olivarez as he scored four second-half touchdowns, including three in the fourth quarter alone.
Olivarez finished with 11 receptions for 318 yards and six touchdowns.
The Cougars scored three touchdowns of their own in the fourth quarter, as Romele found the end zone on a 12-yard run and Clay Christensen and Nick Gorman had scoring receptions. But Watsonville’s firepower was too much in the end.
Watsonville finished with 578 total yards and SLV with 556 on the day.
