San Lorenzo Valley High sophomore Gigi Montellato and freshman Avery Avilla each recorded a double-double as the Cougars defeated Harbor, 55-40, in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League girls basketball action Monday night.
Montellato finished with 12 points and 15 rebounds, while Avilla tallied 10 points and 16 rebounds to go along with four blocks.
Teammate sophomore Evelyn Carter added eight points and six steals for SLV, which improved to 2-4 in SCCAL play while snapping a three-game losing streak.
“It’s definitely important for them to kind of get their momentum and tempo back in the game,” SLV head coach Kenedi Walters said about earning Monday’s victory.
Walters added it was the first time in a long time the Cougars played with a full roster, including junior Jordan Lewis and Montellato, who returned after missing a couple of games.
“It has changed the game,” Walters said. “You can see the difference in energy and just the fight in them.”
Another big challenge this season for Walters has been the lack of a senior presence on the team. In 2024-25, she had six seniors leading the way.
Team captain Elani Schreiber is the lone senior on this season’s squad, yet she still has other upperclassmen in juniors Meghan Bennett, Alyssa Best, Sophia Marello and Lewis to help guide a young SLV group.
Plus, sophomores Taylor Kievlan, Carter and Montellato, along with freshmen Avilla and HollyAnn Dickinson continue to grow at the varsity level throughout the winter campaign.
“Honestly, having a young group isn’t a bad thing,” Walters said. “This gives them room to grow and kind of see where they’re at, going into the future.”
SLV (6-9, 2-4) plays at Scotts Valley on Saturday at 3pm, followed by back-to-back home games against Santa Cruz on Feb. 3 and Aptos on Feb. 6 at 6pm and 5:30pm, respectively.
“I just feel with this group, as long as they keep it a team effort and keep the fight, I think moving forward, even in the next few years, we’re gonna be OK,” Walters said.
