SLV golfer heads to sections

A San Lorenzo Valley High School golfer is heading to the Central Coast Section Championships for the first time since 1992.
Junior Adam Lopez shot a 15-over-par 85 at the Pasatiempo Golf Club on Tuesday, April 30, to be one of two individuals to qualify for the section tournament Tuesday, May 7, at Rancho Canada Golf Club in Carmel.
According to coach Mark Mercer, Lopez is the first golfer since Brent Welsh in 1992 to qualify individually for the tournament. Mercer said it’s an even more impressive feat, considering Lopez’s relative inexperience.
“He has only been playing golf for one year,” Mercer said. “He has worked so hard, and he wanted to play at the next level.”
Lopez tied with St. Francis’ Josh Boyes for the sixth lowest score of the day.
Aptos’ Sam Doerr won the tournament, posting a 77. Both Aptos and Harbor High schools qualified as teams for the CCS tournament.
SLV senior Bully Mullins scored 89, and junior Thomas Flebbe shot 98, 20 strokes better than he shot two years ago as a freshman, Mercer said.
Scotts Valley also had several strong performances.
Senior Colton Marshall finished with an 88 and missed qualifying for CCS by two strokes. Andrew Speirs shot a 93, and Joe Schwartz shot 100. It was the first time Schwartz, a freshman, played at Pasatiempo.
Scotts Valley finished the season with a 5-7 record.
