SLV golfers drop game to Aptos

San Lorenzo Valley’s Larry George led the field this week at the Boulder Creek Country Club, shooting one over par on the front nine against Aptos High.
George, a sophomore, sank three big birdies on his way to a 32 on the narrow course Tuesday, April 12. But though George won the day, SLV ended up losing the match, 189-207, to the Mariners.
“That felt awesome,” George said. “That was my best front-nine score on this course ever.”
For the Cougars (5-4 in league play), Sean Gladden shot a 39, David Madison 44, Scott Overton 44 and Cameron Morse 48.
Aptos has been the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League champion for the past three years and is on par to retain a piece of the title. However, the team remains tied with Harbor High at 10-2 on the season, and both teams are 8-1 in league play.
Spencer Cook led the Mariners, shooting a four-over-par 35.
“We usually have the advantage on this course against Aptos,” Cougar coach Mark Mercer said. “Boulder is so much the polar opposite of Seascape (the Mariners’ home course).”
Where the Seascape course is long, open and wide, Boulder Creek is narrow, shorter and tight through the redwoods.
“This course is always a fun challenge for us,” Aptos coach Gary Gogol said. “These fairways are hard to hit, and the greens are much slower than our boys are used to.”
Despite the vast change of venue, the Mariners held on for the win.
San Lorenzo Valley played Harbor and Scotts Valley after press time Wednesday and Thursday, April 13 and 14, and won’t play again until the league finals April 26 at Pasatiempo Golf Course. The time is still to be announced.
