The big, and we mean really BIG, winner at the Santa Cruz County Fair was a 1300 lb. steer which won “Grand Champion Market Steer (beef cattle)” shown by Quail Creek 4-H member Steven Katawicz. (See photo on page 1.)
Quail Creek’s other winners were: Supreme Champion Register Breeding Ram and 6 Champion and Reserve Champion Breeding Ram and Ewe for the registered sheep. They also had four champions in the breeding chickens’ category.
Fifteen-year old home schooled 10th grader Jenny Wright is the proud owner of a 3-year old Iowa Blue chicken named “Blu” which was strutting its stuff at the Santa Cruz County Fair.
Jenny belongs to the Quail Creek 4-H group and has been exhibiting since 2009. Her mother used to belong to 4-H so Jenny got used to going with her to the fair. She says chickens are fun to play with and are very friendly.
Our gals did great in the quilt exhibits. Bel Cantey, ScottsValley 4-H, won a Blue Ribbon, for her quilt on Ornithology. Bronagh Linn, age 10, also won first place for her quilt. Sarah Chalmers, and Jordan Randolph, both age 11, won second place for their quilts.
The ScottsValley and Quail Creek 4-H-ers excelled with their booth exhibits inside the CrosettiBuilding. The Scotts Valley 4-H Club even had a video of their members telling “What 4-H has Helped me Become” and what they learned at 4-H.
