San Lorenzo Valley junior Gabe Attia was runner-up at the Pat Lovell Holiday Classic wrestling tournament at Aptos High on Jan. 2.

Attia fell to Alisal’s Fabian Martinez in a 14-3 major decision in the 288-pound division finals. Teammate senior Olin Bates (218 pounds) made his way into the fifth-place match as he fell to Buchanan’s Saul Paz in a close 6-5 decision, while London Brown (160) lost both of his matches.

SV shines in tourney action: Scotts Valley freshman Giovanni Vignato and sophomore Coleton LaFontaine each won their respective weight division at the Scott Downs Wildcat Invitational at Los Gatos High on Jan. 3.

Vignato finished with a 4-0 overall record and four pins, including a win over Santa Teresa’s Kade Garcia to capture the 106-pound division.

LaFontaine (157-pounds) went 5-0 with four pins, including a victory over Live Oak’s Owen Hardesty in the championship bout to help the Falcons place fifth out of 39 schools.

Teammate freshman Carson Solbes (113) took fourth place with a 4-2 record, while sophomore Zacharias Ayala placed fourth with a 4-2 in his first-ever tournament.

“I am very impressed with the development of our younger guys,” Scotts Valley head coach Matis Barbier said. “I see them doing great things in this sport moving forward. Giovanni Vignato’s performance stood out to me, he is starting to put the pieces together and looked very sharp on his way to 4-0.”

Boys’ basketball

St. Francis 62, at Scotts Valley 49: Senior Caden Kilpatrick finished with a game-best 24 points in the Falcons’ loss to the Sharks in non-league play Jan. 3.

Teammate senior Alex Burgos contributed eight points, while Johnny Miller added seven points for Scotts Valley (3-9), which will host Soquel in the teams’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League opener on Jan. 9 at 7:30pm.

Girls’ basketball

Scotts Valley 66, at Mills 33: The Falcons had four players finish with double-digit points en route to a blowout victory against the Vikings in non-league action Tuesday evening.

Senior guard Sammy Rebbert finished with a game-best 19 points for Scotts Valley, while senior Amaya Guerra scored a season-best 14 points and snatched 12 rebounds.

Teammate senior Brooklyn Williams had 12 points, including three 3-pointers. Freshman Isabelle Jas recorded a double-double with 21 rebounds and 12 points for the Falcons (10-1), who begin SCCAL play on their own home court against Soquel on Jan. 9 at 6pm.

Boys’ soccer

Scotts Valley 3, at Pacific Grove 1: The Falcons remain unbeaten following a victory over the Breakers in non-league action on Jan. 5. Scotts Valley (2-0-2) will begin SCCAL play at San Lorenzo Valley on Jan. 14 at 3:30pm.

Girls’ soccer

San Lorenzo Valley 1, at Alisal 1: Kendyl Richardson notched the Cougars’ lone goal in a battle-contested non-league draw against the Trojans on Tuesday afternoon.

Teammate Dahlia Cardenas was credited with the assist to Richardson’s score in the 70th minute. Goalkeeper Jenna Stover recorded six saves for SLV (3-2-1), which begins SCCAL play against Scotts Valley at SLV High on Jan. 13 at 3:30pm.
