San Lorenzo Valley senior Ollin Bates and junior Gabriel Attia received a chance to extend their tremendous wrestling season for just one more week.

The Cougar standout athletes are both headed to this weekend’s California Interscholastic Federation State Wrestling Championships at Dignity Health Arena in Bakersfield.

Attia was runner-up in the 285-pound weight division at the Central Coast Section Masters Meet on Feb. 21, earning him a spot at the State tournament.

Attia lost in a tight 10-6 decision to Alisal senior Fabian Martinez, who lost to Attia in the CCS Southern Regional tourney finals on Feb. 14.

Going into the Masters Meet, Attia was the No. 1 seed out of the Southern Region.

He pinned Willow Glen senior Micah Pisoni to kick off the opening round, followed by another quick victory via fall over Salinas junior Myles Jackson in the second.

Attia then pinned Bellarmine senior Casey Huchim in the second period, which automatically qualified him into the CIF State Championships set for Feb. 26-28.

Bates punched his ticket to the CIF State Championships as a top-four finalist in the 215-pound division.

The SLV star football lineman pinned Junipero Serra senior Tristen Klemish in the consolation bracket, and later was pinned by Palma junior Bernie Phillips in the third place match.

Bates made his way into the quarterfinals by beating Milpitas junior Adullah Barhoush and Half Moon Bay senior Andres Haro, before falling to eventual champion Brian Haran of Gilroy.

Scotts Valley freshman Gio Vignato suffered an early exit as he dropped both of his matches in the 106-pound division.

Scotts Valley sophomore Micaiah Trujillo finished 2-2 in the 144-pound division. He was pinned by Santa Clara junior Bianco Chang in the consolation bracket.

Scotts Valley senior Caleb Mendoza ended the day with a 1-2 record, falling to Palo Alto junior Tyler Tonella in the 175-pound consolation bracket.
