Girls’ soccer
In a first league match of the season, under the rookie head coach Kellen Coffis, SLVHS’ Lady Cougars beat Watsonville’s Saint Francis Central Coast Catholic High School Sharks, 5-0.
All the scoring happened within the initial half hour of the first half. Jenna Francis started scoring followed by Rebecca Vernazza, Jillian Francis, and Lauren Thompson (scoring twice).
Officially playing in 5-4-1 formation (5 defenders, 4 midfielders and a striker), half-back Lauren Thompson frequently joined the lone striker Jenna Francis, both wrecking havoc on the Sharks defense. After realizing that the Shark’s attack wasn’t really capable of creating any serious threats, almost the entire San LorenzoValley team practically lived on Sharks’ half of the field for the rest of the game.
Although the game started with ferocious intensity, it dwindled in the second half. “At that point, after this game, we have a winning record, with a pretty good 3-3 preseason behind us,” said coach Coffis who is a former star winger on the Cougar’s varsity soccer team. “This is a young team, there’s just one senior and four juniors, so we will only get better with time,” said Coffis. .He believes that the main thing is to go into every game with a strong expectation to win. He said that their next game is against ScottsValley (High School) girls, who are a perennial league powerhouse. “We’ll learn a lot from that game, it will be a real catalyst.”
That game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 12, in ScottsValley, but if that field gets deteriorated by the heavy rains the game will be moved to Felton.
